I still don’t *really* understand what this site is or who uses it, but they gave me a (pro-bono) chance to shout out my favorite places for food, music, booze, caffeine, etc. in Los Angeles. Plus, they promised to call me an expert. To see my picks, go to Utrip, click “See Itinerary,” and then enter an arbitrary date (you’re not going to do this, I know, it’s okay). From there (ha), click on the little “Overview” tab above the map. FINALLY, you can scroll down Continue reading

Live In LA: Coathangers, Surfer Blood Dominate Echo Park’s Waved Out Fest
On Saturday, the Aquarium Drunkard blog threw an all-day indie rock gala at the Echo and Echoplex. Sixteen bands on the rise (local and otherwise) dropped in to deliver solid sets that went well into the night. Surfer Blood was the main attraction, but the Coathangers slew the competition, which was a stiff mix of excellent acts like Superhumanoids, Active Child, Best Coast, and Gamble House. Photos and full review here, via LA Weekly.
Here’s another outtake of Crook Kid Coathanger in action.
The Franks Throw Record Release On Sunday
My dear friend and colleague Colin Stutz, a.k.a. Jean Dont, has a damn good East Side punk-rock band called The Franks, which is celebrating the pending release of its second EP, Duh (the first was called Un), on Sunday at the Echo. Le Face also plays, and Part Time Punks presents. Go there.
Here’s the flyer. Vids after the jump.
