Informer: A Brief History of White Reggae

White-Reggae-history-spin

READ IT ON SPIN

This one’s, ahem, a Labour of Love if you will (shout out UB40). It went live a few days after my D’Angelo review, and I was too embarrassed to post these two side by side. Four months later, I’m into it. Like so many lefty caucasians raised in 420-friendly families, I ingested a lot of reggae as a yout’ and, for a brief high school moment, thought I’d found saviors in 311 and Sublime. I still bump a lot of Jamaican roots, but the time has come to give dap to the odd phenomena of blond dreadlocks and fake patois (shout out Das Racist), plus the restless audio hybridizing of the ’90s. This list goes back to the very birth of white reggae in 1965, and ends in 2014 with that most irie and unexpected of recent hits, “Rude.” Peep it on SPIN.* Continue reading

Holy Ship 2014: High With Skrillex on the High Seas

Skrillex at Holy Ship!! with Tiesto and Zedd

READ MORE AT SPIN

We went on a rave cruise and it was ridiculous. For your vicarious enjoyment (not ours, no, of course not) we left from Miami on January 9 and returned three days later, stopping along the way at two private Bahamian islands for beach parties featuring the likes of Diplo, Chromeo, Disclosure, and Duck Sauce. There were also a ton of skull-drilling EDM performances within the hull of a mega-ship. And 4,000 fellow revelers. And a never-ending pizza buffet. And that time Skrillex smoked us out onstage while Pharrell performed two feet away. Continue reading

Glitch Mob Leaves Alpha Pup, Leaks LP Info

glitch mob live

The Glitch Mob performs... or takes drink orders.

Still more questions than answers, but it seems the Low End Theory-reared Glitch Mob crew has left the nest. Via West Coast Sound:

“A recent Mob-related inquiry to Moo’s people revealed that ‘Alpha Pup is no longer releasing the upcoming Glitch Mob album,’ which is another as-long-as-we’ve-known-them sort of thing — the group’s full-length debut has been a long time coming, and perhaps now we know why. […] Likely (speculation alert) it’s a power move that will align the crew with a major label or a larger, more established indie, or, like, Diplo.”
