Live in LA: Sublime Reunite with New Singer

Rome has got lovin'. Yep, it's what he's got.

Friends, stoners, layabouts — lend me your eyes. Last night I caught the first stop on the Sublime With Rome tour, which just so happened to kick off on a day known within a certain set as “4-20.” If you don’t know, now you know. The air was pungent and the sing-alongs were plenty. A good time was had by all, and you can read about it here, via Spin.

Sub Pop Announces Avi Buffalo LP, IAMSOUND Kicks Off “LA Collection” 7-Inch Series

Two bits of exciting news from Los Angeles-area music-makers. The first pertains to Avi Buffalo, who I wrote about for the Weekly back in October (and whose first Sub Pop release made it into INCHES). The second comes from up-and-coming L.A. indie label IAMSOUND and involves a ton of great local artists including Nosaj Thing and Ryan Heffington’s We Are The World. Live In LA: Cold War Kids Start Mini Tour

So despite what you’ve heard, Radiohead wasn’t the only band to play a show in L.A. over the weekend. Cold War Kids kicked off a mini tour behind its new EP, Behave Yourself, with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontdude Alec Ounsworth opening. In a world where artistic chutzpah makes the calls, that lineup would have been reversed, but alas, that is not the world that we live in. Read about the show here, on Spin.

INCHES001: Local revolutions w/ Mika Miko, Xasthur, Rx Bandits, Castledoor, Shafiq Husayn

I’m exceedingly proud to announce the debut of my new weekly vinyl column, “INCHES” on the LA Weekly music blog, West Coast Sound. The full title of the inaugural installment is “INCHES001: Local revolutions, pt.1 — five L.A. vinyl exclusives revealed and reviewed.”

This edition features five releases by L.A.-area artists on L.A.-area labels — Mika Miko (PPM), Xasthur (Hydra Head), RxBandits (Sargent House), Castledoor (Seven Inch Project), and Shafiq (Poo-Bah) — that either are not available on CD, or sport a drool-worthy design. A free MP3 accompanies each writeup, along with a photo of the package shot, for better or for worse, by yours truly.

Night Vision: Avi Buffalo @ The Echo

Avi Buffalo (the name of the man and the band) played the third installment of his/its May residency at The Echo last night. The 18-year old frontman seems smaller and younger in person than he does in pictures, but he’s an even larger presence than one would expect. It’s mostly the effect of that impossibly youthful voice, which sounds not unlike the imagined middleground between Devendra and Danielson. Also helpful was the general freewheeling-ness of this particular set, in which Avi eschewed favorites like “Summer Cum” (playing in “Now Hear This”) in favor of loudness and jamitude.

The following clips feature poor lighting but decent sound. The first song is one of the night’s quieter ones, while the second is the band’s 7-minute closer.
