The story is pretty thorough, so I’ll keep the introduction brief. I had the pleasure of profiling Steven Ellison, a.k.a. Flying Lotus, for the new issue of LA Weekly, on stands today. Ellison was kind enough to invite me into his home on two occasions, to share some very “special” snacks with me, and to more-or-less grant me unlimited access to his personal Rolodex. Cameos come from an international cast — Mary Anne Hobbs, Ravi Coltrane, the Gaslamp Killer, Daddy Kev, a man named Thundercat — but this is, at its core, an L.A. story. So if you live in that fair city, pick up a hard copy to read. If not, click here to dive in.

Kaleidoscope Eyes: Q&A with Video Artist Jesse Moretti on Her Collaboration with Julia Holter
L.A.’s Jesselisa Moretti is an astounding visual talent whose work for Dublab, Leaving Records and others has gone criminally unsung thus far. Take a look at her work, and read her thoughts on collaborating with the excellent and always original Julia Holter (Human Ear Music) over at West Coast Sound, and if you like what you see, tell someone else about it.
L.A. Beat Scene’s TAKE Announces Alpha Pup LP, Gives Out Free ‘Incredibright’ MP3
Today, Alpha Pup Records — the Downtown L.A. label behind the Low End Theory club and numerous worthwhile beat scene releases — announced the long-awaited next full-length record from TAKE. Only Mountain will be released on April 20, and judging from the free MP3 the label’s sharing, it’ll be a roiling pot of old school IDM, ’90s R&B percussive elements, Dubstep bass-derived doom, and ethereal melodies. Download “Incredibright” below.

Glitch Mob Leaves Alpha Pup, Leaks LP Info
Still more questions than answers, but it seems the Low End Theory-reared Glitch Mob crew has left the nest. Via West Coast Sound:
“A recent Mob-related inquiry to Moo’s people revealed that ‘Alpha Pup is no longer releasing the upcoming Glitch Mob album,’ which is another as-long-as-we’ve-known-them sort of thing — the group’s full-length debut has been a long time coming, and perhaps now we know why. […] Likely (speculation alert) it’s a power move that will align the crew with a major label or a larger, more established indie, or, like, Diplo.”
