Free Kutmah! L.A. DJ/Artist Faces Deportation

The story’s already been told (and quite well, I might add) by L.A. music journo Jeff Weiss, but the word needs to spread yet further. One of the city’s most vital creative minds, DJ and visual artist Kutmah, a.k.a. Justin McNulty, has been detained by immigration agents and is being held in New Mexico while officials prepare to expel him from the country.

Kutmah is part of the larger Dublab collective, and one of the founders of the L.A. beat scene. Click on either of the banners above or below to sign a petition, or otherwise rally to stop this from happening.

LA Weekly Cover: Flying Lotus’ Cosmic Drama

Steven Ellison, a.k.a. Flying Lotus (Star Foreman)

The story is pretty thorough, so I’ll keep the introduction brief. I had the pleasure of profiling Steven Ellison, a.k.a. Flying Lotus, for the new issue of LA Weekly, on stands today. Ellison was kind enough to invite me into his home on two occasions, to share some very “special” snacks with me, and to more-or-less grant me unlimited access to his personal Rolodex. Cameos come from an international cast — Mary Anne Hobbs, Ravi Coltrane, the Gaslamp Killer, Daddy Kev, a man named Thundercat — but this is, at its core, an L.A. story. So if you live in that fair city, pick up a hard copy to read. If not, click here to dive in.

Mini-Feature: Calling All Kids Calls it Quits

Hand in hand.

Hand in hand, the way it should be.

It bums me out something fierce to learn that this week’s installment of Calling All Kids will be its last. The Hyperion Tavern-hosted Friday-night hang has been a go-to for lovers of progressive music and cheap ale since it started up 15 months ago. Particularly, those who are involved with the good fight — writers, editors, publicists, artists, promoters, DJs, Dublabbers — seemed to take a shine to the place. Frankly, it felt like home.

So as I was taking a blog-powered trip down memory lane, I realized I’d never posted this little nugget on Funny Ha Ha. It’s really just a news piece about CAK’s one-year anniversary back in January, but since it includes a chat with the event’s creators Sodapop (Shaun Koplow of Anticon) and Matthewdavid (of Leaving Records), it seemed appropriate.

It also serves as a reminder that while the weekly may be called off, there’s undoubtedly more in store for the Calling All Kids name.

Kaleidoscope Eyes: Q&A with Video Artist Jesse Moretti on Her Collaboration with Julia Holter

L.A.’s Jesselisa Moretti is an astounding visual talent whose work for Dublab, Leaving Records and others has gone criminally unsung thus far. Take a look at her work, and read her thoughts on collaborating with the excellent and always original Julia Holter (Human Ear Music) over at West Coast Sound, and if you like what you see, tell someone else about it.
