Kaleidoscope Eyes: Q&A with Video Artist Jesse Moretti on Her Collaboration with Julia Holter

A slice of Moretti's 'Echo Expansions' LP cover.

L.A.’s Jesselisa Moretti is an astounding visual talent whose work for Dublab, Leaving Records and others has gone criminally unsung thus far. Take a look at her work, and read her thoughts on collaborating with the excellent and always original Julia Holter (Human Ear Music) over at West Coast Sound, and if you like what you see, tell someone else about it.

L.A. Beat Scene’s TAKE Announces Alpha Pup LP, Gives Out Free ‘Incredibright’ MP3

TAKE on the titular mount?

Today, Alpha Pup Records — the Downtown L.A. label behind the Low End Theory club and numerous worthwhile beat scene releases — announced the long-awaited next full-length record from TAKE. Only Mountain will be released on April 20, and judging from the free MP3 the label’s sharing, it’ll be a roiling pot of old school IDM, ’90s R&B percussive elements, Dubstep bass-derived doom, and ethereal melodies. Download “Incredibright” below.

Q&A: YouTube Phenom ‘The Napkin Holder’ on Covering Gaga, Wayne, Taylor and more

Napkin Holder plays "Single Ladies" using a single lady.

Weirder things have happened, but corresponding with a guy who calls himself “Napkin Holder” is medium-high on my long-running personal list of journalistic strangeness (doing the “Humpty Dance” with Digital Underground and going on a “groove cruise” with the Flaming Lips currently holding spots number one and two, respectively). Odder still, this piano-playing, pop-covers YouTube phenom is decidedly unweird as an interview subject — basically, your reserved virtuosic nerd type (with all due respect). He’ll be performing at the Space 15 Twenty, er, space across from Amoeba Music in Hollywood on Saturday evening. Read all about it via our Q&A on LA Weekly‘s West Coast Sound.

First Listen: Mike Patton’s ‘Mondo Cane,’ An Inventive Love Letter to Morricone

Mondo Cane: The world is a dog, and Patton its master.

On Monday, Speakeasy PR announced the pending release of a new Mike Patton record, Mondo Cane:

Recorded at a series of European performances including an outdoor concert in a Northern Italian piazza, the self-titled album features traditional Italian pop songs as well as a rendition of Ennio Morricone’s “Deep Down.”   Patton worked with a 30-piece orchestra and choir to create the uniquely new Mondo Cane sound.

Mondo Cane isn’t due out until May 4, via Patton’s own Ipecac Recordings, but I’ve reviewed it anyway over at West Coast Sound. It was meant to be “first impression,” but became a full-blown critique. Why? I couldn’t help myself. Some blame the devil; I blame Patton — is there a difference, really?

Live In LA: The Franks at Origami Vinyl!!

Gratuitous exclamation point usage, I know, but a handful of my favorite things came together on Saturday night when photographer Andrew Herrold and I walked out of The Echo following Young Veins’ early set (which we covered for Spin). Two doors down at the excellent record shop Origami Vinyl, lo and behold, The Franks were tearing through a spirited set of angular econo-punk. To enhance matters further, shopkeeper Neal Schield tossed us a couple of Colt 45 tallboys as we walked through the door, and was kind enough to let Andrew fire off a few shots. The place was about as jammed pack and jammed pack can be — further evidence of the rise of this exceptional East Side three-piece.

More photos after the jump.

Live In LA: Young Veins Plays First Show at Echo

Those familiar words that open Panic! at the Disco’s last album, Pretty. Odd., have picked up some unintended irony over the past few months: “You don’t have to worry because we’re still the same band.” Not quite.

Not only was the Panic!’s 2008 record a clear departure for the Vegas band – who’d left behind the R&B-infused emo-pop for some baroque Sgt. Pepper’s bluster – but it preceded a departure of a different sort. Members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker went their own way last July, leaving their former group to singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith.

What’s more, a simultaneous release of dueling new singles – “New Perspective” by Panic!, and “Change” by the freshly formed Young Veins – revealed a telling detail: While Team Brencer offered a polished take on the old emo sound, RyRo and J-Walk took the Beatles thing and ran with it, effectively splitting the Panic! fan-base down the middle – same band, two ways.

The far more promising way, IMHO, goes by the name Young Veins, and that (sorta) brand new Topanga-based band played its first show together at The Echo over the weekend. Read about it here, via Spin.
